How to Connect your
Computer to Your TV You don't
need an expensive Media PC to have a great Digital Home experience.
Any home computer can be connected very simply and inexpensively. |
||||||||
| 1. Connecting the Video | ||||||||
| Most newer TV's are "plug-n-play" right out of the box. Look at the back of your TV for either one of these: | ||||||||
| . | ||||||||
| ...... | ||||||||
| PC | ||||||||
| PC's generally use VGA to connect to the monitor. You will need a VGA cable to connect your TV to your PC (can be found easily online or thru any electronics retailer). | ||||||||
| . | ||||||||
| Mac | ||||||||
| The Mac Mini has a DVI connection with a VGA adapter so it can connect automatically using VGA. You will need to purchase a VGA male/male cable (as little as $3 online). Apple also has a DVI to TV (RCA and S-video) for about $19 but the resolution isn't as good as DVI or VGA. | ||||||||

| If your TV does NOT have VGA or DVI then go to your TV and look for these: | ||||||||
| . | ||||||||
| ...... | ||||||||
| If your computer has "TV-out", then you may have either one or both of these outputs. Use the appropriate RCA or S-Video cable to connect. | ||||||||
| _____________________________________________________________ | ||||||||
| If
your computer does NOT have "TV-out", you can purchase a VGA-to-TV
converter.
This will convert your computer's VGA output into either RCA composite or S-video suitable for your TV, but again the picture quality is not as good as VGA or DVI. You can purchase one of these for as little as $50 online. As mentioned above, Apple's is about $19. |
||||||||
| _____________________________________________________________ | ||||||||
| To switch from Monitor to TV without unplugging the cable, you will need a KVM Switch (about $10 online.) | ||||||||
|
||||||||
| _____________________________________________________________ | ||||||||
| B. Connecting the Audio | ||||||||
| You
will still need to connect the sound using the audio connections on your
computer and TV. Your computer has a miniplug audio connection and your TV has RCA composite audio so you will need a Miniplug-To-RCA Stereo Audio Cable. If you want to play the sound out of both PC and TV speakers, you'll also need a Miniplug Splitter. Again as with all other accessories mentioned on this page, these are simple, inexpensive purchases found anywhere online or via electronic retailers. |
